Researching Ways to Make Memories Last a Lifetime

Thank you for your interest in supporting Alzheimer’s research at UCI MIND.

    Our mailing address is:

UCI MIND, 2646 Biological Sciences III, Irvine CA 92696-4545.  Please include all nine numbers in our Zip Code to make sure it reaches our offices.   You may call:  Linda Scheck, Director of Develpment and Donor Stewardship, (949) 824-3251 or email: lscheck@uci.edu, for more information.

Research today.  Hope tomorrow.  A transformational increase in research funding is needed to find the answers that will prevent future generations from suffering from age-related dementias such as Alzheimer’s disease.

The numbers speak volumes: 5.4 million patients in the US today with 16 million expected by 2050.  Every day 10,000 Baby Boomers turn 65 just as their risk for developing Alzheimer’s disease begins to rise.  The cost in this country for Alzheimer’s disease care, including Medicare and Medicaid, is estimated to be $200 Billion a year!

We face bankrupting our nation, financially, physically and emotionally unless we find treatments that work.

Your donations will help develop new techniques to advance the understanding of Alzheimer’s disease and related neurological disorders.  Your gift can make a difference!   Thank you for coming to this page.

    Memorial Donations

What a wonderful way to commemorate a loved one and to help support Alzheimer’s disease research. Many families choose to make a lasting donation in memory of a friend or loved one in lieu of flowers. If you have lost a loved one and would like to have memorial donations sent to The Institute for Memory Impairments and Neurological Disorders, please follow the simple process as shown below:

    • Please make checks payable to: UCI MIND
    • Indicate on the memo line of the check: Alzheimer’s disease research
    • Include with the check:
      • Name of the individual in whose memory the donation is being made
      • The name and address of where you would like the acknowledgements to be sent (i.e. name of spouse/ family member of individual in whose memory the donation is being made)
      • Donor’s information Donor’s Name
      • Donor’s Address
      • Donor’s City, State and Zip
      • Donor’s telephone number

    Mail your contribution to:

UCI MIND, 2646 Biological Sciences III, Irvine CA 92696-4545.  Please include all nine numbers in our Zip Code to make sure it reaches our offices.  Thank you!

    •  Once the memorial donations have been received, a thank you acknowledgment is sent to the donor. In addition, a thank you acknowledgment is also sent to the person to be acknowledged on the individual’s behalf, so that they know that a donation has been made. All donors will be recognized in the MIND Matters Newsletter, unless the donation is designated as anonymous.

    Your gift is important.

Dementia strikes at the very core of what makes us uniquely human and impacts not only the individual, but those loved ones who provide care and support.  We are making great strides in this battle but we rely on research partnerships and financial support from people like you.

As you know, resources and financial support are limited and make it difficult to fund all of the very promising research potential.  However, your donations to UCI MIND have allowed clinical and basic science research activities to move  ahead as we work together to fight against Alzheimer’s disease.

Some people give direct donations of cash, some have asked that memorial donations be sent in lieu of flowers, and some have left money to the program as a legacy gift in their will or estate. There are many ways to support UCI MIND.

Each one helps shape the future of our research. If you wish to support Alzheimer’s disease research at UCI, you may do so by sending your tax-deductible contribution to the Institute for Memory Impairments and Neurological Disorders, UCI MIND, payable to UCI MIND. All donors are acknowledged in the UCI MIND MIND Matters Newsletter.

For any questions about how to make a donation, please contact us at the UCI Institute for Memory Impairments and Neurological Disorders,UCI MIND, by calling Linda Scheck, Director of Development and Donor Stewardship, (949) 824-3251 or email: lscheck@uci.edu for more information.  Our address is:

Charitable gifts that help at tax time

As you do your tax planning, we hope you will consider making good use of the income tax charitable deduction. Your year-end gift can reduce your income taxes while providing meaningful support for the research and assessment center at UCI MIND.    UCI MIND is dedicated to developing new techniques to advance the understanding of Alzheimer’s disease and related neurological disorders.  Dementia strikes at the very core of what makes us uniquely human and impacts not only the individual, but those loved ones who provide care and support.

Regardless of your income, in most cases, you can lower the taxes you pay through charitable giving. Of course, the amount of the income tax savings will depend on your tax bracket.

As you know, giving is about much more than tax savings. Your charitable gifts make an important difference in what we are able to accomplish. The following are some of the best year-end gift ideas.

    Cash

If you itemize, you can lower your income taxes simply by writing us a check by December 31. There is no easier way to garner a year-end charitable deduction. Gifts of cash are fully deductible — up to a maximum of fifty percent of your adjusted gross income. For instance, if your adjusted gross income is $50,000, up to $25,000 of charitable gifts may be deducted this year. Any excess can generally be carried forward and deducted over as many as five subsequent years.

    Real Estate

Your residence, vacation home, farm or acreage may have appreciated in value through the years such that its sale would mean a sizable capital gains tax.

By making a year-end gift of this property instead, you would avoid the capital gains tax, and, at the same time, receive a charitable deduction for the full fair market value of the property.

It is also possible to make a gift of your home, farm or vacation home so that you and your spouse can continue to use it for your lifetimes — while you receive a current year tax deduction. Please contact us for more details.

    Stock

If you own stock it is almost always more beneficial to contribute stock than cash. This is because a gift of appreciated stock generally offers a twofold tax savings.

First, you avoid paying any capital gains tax on the increase in value of the stock. Second, you receive an income tax charitable deduction for the full fair market value of the stock at the time of the gift.

    Charitable Gift Annuities

If you own stock that is fluctuating with the stock market and is paying you little in dividends, a “life-income” gift may be an appropriate year-end gift.

You could transfer the stock to us and establish a “charitable gift annuity” that would provide you with a greater annual return.  This income would be paid to you and/or a loved one for life, after which the assets would be distributed outright to UCI MIND.

Through such an arrangement, you may be able to increase your income and make a meaningful (and tax-deductible) contribution to us at the same time.

    Other Ways to Give

    Gift Pledges

A pledge is a formal statement of intention to make a gift. It may be followed by an immediate gift or it may simply confirm your intention to make a gift in the future. Many donors choose to complete their gift pledge by making regular payments over time.

    Gifts with Retained Interest

Your gift can allow you to hold an interest in that gift for your lifetime or for a specified term of years. After that time, the funds become available to the specified project or program. For example, you can set up a charitable trust that allows you to receive income from that trust for a specified period, or for life.

    Planned Giving: Legacy Gifts

Planned gifts are gift arrangements that have specific tax advantages and often include lifetime income to a beneficiary or beneficiaries named by the donor. Many UCI MIND Donors have utilized planned giving methods and are enjoying the benefits today: capital gains tax savings, increased income and income-tax savings.

    Gifts of Endowment

A gift of endowment is a fund that is maintained in perpetuity, and only a portion of the annual investment return is used for the purposes specified by the donor. The rest of the investment yield is returned to principal. Thus, over the years, the fund can grow and hopefully keep up with inflation. Such endowments, which typically bear the name of the donor or donors, reflect your interest and serve as an enduring testament to your generosity.

    Appreciated Securities

A gift of long-term appreciated marketable securities help you save taxes twice. Such a gift will provide an income-tax charitable deduction and capital gains tax savings.

    Gifts of Real Estate

When you give a gift of your home or real property, you may claim an income-tax charitable deduction based on the full market value of the gift, avoid capital gains taxes, and eliminate certain costs associated with the transfer of real property. Gifts of real estate can also provide income to you.

    Unrestricted Gifts

When you do not restrict the use of your gift, the Institute gains flexibility not otherwise available. The unrestricted gifts can be used to meet the changing or urgent needs of the Institute.

The Federal Government spends $6 billion a year on all cancer research.  It spends only $480 million a year on Alzheimer’s research.  The numbers of cancer deaths are declining rapidly, while those from Alzheimer’s disease are rapidly increasing.   We actively advocate for increased funding from the National Institutes on Aging.

Government-funded research alone cannot provide the answer.  The gap can only be filled by members of the community.  You!  All of us!  Private donors at all levels of giving who fund research today create hope tomorrow.
