Ask the Doc forums take a unique approach to providing the community with the latest information about Alzheimer’s disease and the related dementias.  A “traveling” panel of professionals, including a neurologist, neuropsychologist, neuroscientist, and clinical psychologist, led by Frank LaFerla, Director of the UCI Institute for Memory Impairments and Neurological Disorders (UCI MIND), make themselves available through Ask the Doc forums to answer audience questions about diagnosis, treatment, care, and risk reduction for Alzheimer’s disease.   On May 29, the UCI MIND Ask the Doc will feature:

  • Steven Schreiber, M.D., Professor in Residence, Department of Neurology
  • Malcolm B. Dick, Ph.D., Neuropsychologist, UCI MIND Memory Assessment and Research Center
  • Cordula Dick-Muehlke, Ph.D., UCI MIND Director of Education
  • Kim Green, Ph.D., Neuroscientist, Assistant Professor, Department of Neurobiology and Behavior

All too often the typical lecture leaves too little time for audience members to ask the questions of most relevance for themselves.  At Ask the Doc forums, audiences can spend the entire time seeking answers to questions about the significance of memory difficulties they or their loved ones are experiencing, differences between terms such as dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, managing difficult symptoms, advances in treatment, and specific risk reduction strategies (e.g., diet, exercise).  After each session, panel members make themselves available to continue answering individual questions, as needed.

Ask the Doc forums are offered quarterly in a variety of locations throughout Orange County, such as senior or community centers.  Recently, Ask the Doc forums have also been offered in partnership with community-based agencies (e.g., the Alzheimer’s Association of Orange County), coalitions (e.g., the Orange County Aging Services Collaborative) and offices of local legislators, thereby increasing access to these well-received events.
